Ingredients
- 1 head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cooked white rice
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the cabbage and cook until the leaves are softened and pliable, about 5 minutes. Carefully remove the leaves, drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain off any excess fat.
- Add the cooked rice, onion, garlic powder, oregano, basil, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes (if using) to the beef. Cook until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes.
- In a small bowl, combine the tomato sauce and beef broth. Set aside.
- Lay the softened cabbage leaves out on a flat surface. Place about 1/4 cup of the beef and rice mixture in the center of each leaf. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll up, tucking the edges in to form a tight package. Place the cabbage rolls in the prepared baking dish. Pour the tomato sauce and beef broth over the rolls.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
